Tinker Like It’s 1773 with These Internet Marketing Tools

Now that I live in Old City, Philadelphia, I’ve been reading through Walter Isaacson’s Benjamin Franklin: An American Life and was impressed with how much Ben Franklin was a tinkerer.  In his spare time during one of his five-year stints in London, Franklin investigated and discovered the following:

•  The common cold “may possibly be spread by contagion” rather than cold air.
• The effectiveness of exercise was best measured by pulse/heart rate and body heat rather than just by duration.
• Lead poisoning was causing stiffness or paralysis in tradesmen.
• Boats travel faster through deeper canals than shallow ones since in deeper water there is more room for the displaced water to travel under the boat.
• Oceans were originally salty and didn’t just become salty because of salts and minerals deposited from rivers.
• An instrument made of various sizes of glass bowls, called the Armonica, that produce different sounds when pressed with wet fingers (Isaacson, 264-266).

• Hootsuite.com – great application to use Twitter through and to manage other profiles
• Google Reader – subscribe to blogs and other RSS feeds and read them all in one location
• Ping.fm – update multiple social media profiles from one place
• Google Alerts – track when certain keywords and phrases (e.g. your company’s or important client’s names) are mentioned online
• Blog post on making RSS feeds out of Google Alerts
